Madrid Río beach: summer with children (and without a real beach)
The water jets of Madrid Río are Madrid's urban beach: free, right in the park and with the skyline in the background. Everything you need to know for the perfect summer plan.

Madrid does not have a sea, but it has a “beach”: the esplanade of Madrid Río water jets, known to all Madrid residents as Madrid Río beach. As soon as the heat hits, hundreds of children (and not so children) cool off among their fountains.
What is it
An esplanade next to the Arganzuela Bridge with dozens of water jets coming out of the ground at different heights and rhythms. It is not a pool — there is no sheet of water — but a forest of jets to run, get wet and play. Free and open like the rest of the park.
How to organize the plan
- Hot hours: in the middle of summer, early riser or dusk; At noon the ground burns and the sun is harsh.
- What to bring: swimsuit, towel, flip flops that can get wet, sun protection and change of clothes (they end up soaked).
- Services: there are toilets and fountains in the park; The nearby terraces solve the aperitif.
- Winning combination: jets + park play areas + ice cream at the Matadero. Complete afternoon without spending almost anything.
Local Tips
- The jets work in hot season (the City Council turns them on when high temperatures arrive and turns them off out of season).
- On heat wave weekends it gets crowded: if you can, go during the week.
- The grass area next to the esplanade is perfect for the towel-base of operations.
From our accommodations in Usera Madrid Río beach is just a short walk away — with children, that proximity is priceless: an afternoon of water and back to the shower in ten minutes.
